Facility details

Nori-making history The shallow sea from the Tama River estuary to the Tsurumi River estuary was called "Daishi no umi". It was developed as a fishing ground filled with abundance of fish and shellfish. Nori farming was started by fishermen in the Daishigawara district in 1871 when they obtained the sea use right from the national government. "Nori" grows in low-temperature winter season. Initially, it was harvested as a side job outside the farming season. Gradually, it became the main business of the farmers. In around 1934, there were 400 households involved in nori farming, helped by additional workers coming from other rural areas.
Turning point in nori-making history As Kawasaki eventually became an industrial city, fishery gradually declined due to increase in landfill sites and deterioration of water quality. In 1972, the fishery right was abandoned and Kawasaki's fishery ceased.
Preservation of tools Traditional tools used in nori farming was displayed in the Kawasaki Ocean Historical Preservation Association in its efforts to preserve the former local industries. On February 1, 2011, "Kawasaki Nori-making Reference Room" was opened to display these traditional tools.
